High performance 1-channel imaging Analog Front-End with CMOS Data Output

The CS82L41 is a single-channel imaging analog front end (AFE) for scanner applications, combining an image sensor ADC, analog conditioning, and LED driver in one device. Designed for CCD and CIS image sensors, the CS82L41 operates at pixel conversion rates up to 24 MSPS, making it well suited for high-speed document scanners, flatbed scanners, and barcode scanning systems.

The CS82L41 receives analog pixel data from the CCD or CIS image sensor, performs scanner-specific analog conditioning, including reset level clamping (RLC), correlated double sampling (CDS), gain and offset adjustment, then converts the signal to digital pixel data for output to a scanner controller ASIC over CMOS output pins.

Compared to alternative single channel imaging AFEs, the CS82L41 offers lower power operation (47 mW) and higher levels of integration, including RGB and white LED drivers and on-chip LDO regulator for CIS support. This integration reduces BOM and simplifies scanner front end design.

Selection Guidelines

The CS82L41 should be selected when:

  • Designing a high-speed scanner with up to 24 MSPS.
  • Selecting a single-channel analog front end for a scanner with a CCD or CIS sensor.
  • Reducing power consumption in a scanner analog front end.
  • Minimizing BOM with an integrated scanner AFE that includes LED drivers and on chip power management.
  • The downstream ASIC supports 3.3 V CMOS parallel data and SPI control.
  • Design resources are limited and the sensor output requires scanner-specific analog conditioning.

The CS82L41 should not be selected when:

  • The system design requires multiple simultaneous sensor channels. In this case the 4 channel CS82L44 or the 6 channel CS82L46 should be considered.
  • The application requires long-distance, noise resilient digital transport such as LVDS, MIPI. In this case the 4 channel CS82L44 or the 6 channel CS82L46 should be considered.
  • Greater than 24 MSPS throughput per channel is required.

The primary application for the CS82L41 is in scanning systems. Relevant applications include:

  • Document scanners (flatbed and sheet-fed scanners)
  • Office and home scanners using CIS image sensors
  • Industrial scanning systems and high-precision measurement scanners
  • Barcode and 2D code scanning systems
  • Machine vision systems requiring line-scan image acquisition
  • USB-powered scanner designs
  • Laser distance measurement systems
